There are so many classes I've taken at Stockton that have changed my life, but I suppose that only a few are worth mentioning. Listed below are the major environmental science courses that helped prepare me for the road ahead, as well as the coursework involved in each course.
Physical Geography
- Climate change, weather systems, weathering processes and associated landscapes
- Water budget calculations
- Geographic Information Systems: manipulations of real-world data
Physical Geology
- Identification of features on topographic maps, creation of maps
- Field work, identification of mountain formation, mineralogy
- Soil science and the study of natural disasters
Groundwater Hydrology
- Assessment of the Aberjona River study (Woburn, Massachusetts)
- Calculation of groundwater flow using Darcy's Law
- Use topographic maps to calculate hydraulic gradients, flow, and cones of depression
Environmental Pollution and Regulation
- Learned about environmental law and policy at great depths
- Conducted mock site assessment project
- Learned about toxic chemicals, trace metal pollutants
Pollution Remediation and Biotechnology
- Learned the chemical, physical, biological, and thermal remediation techniques
- Learned associated techniques (soil vapor extraction, water pumping, excavation)
- Leaned about trace metal removal from soils and water
Ecological Principles
- Field work in collecting and analyzing data
- Learned the behaviors and niche utilization techniques of mammal species
- Identification techniques learned for woody plants of Pine Barrens
Environmental Issues
- Analyzed professional presentations about water quality, urban air quality, biodiversity
- Worked with others on Absecon Carbon Inventory Audit, both in class and field
- Discussed misconceptions of radiation, potential for new energy advancements
